Nothing To Grouse About

The latest addition to the Bon Vivant collection at ShopSouthernArrondissement! I adore his short little legs and round little belly! This is a great stationary option for the man in your life. It adds a little personality without being cute. (You know you can't describe a man's stationary as cute.) Just another fabulous option from the creative mind of Liza Cleveland!

Friday Faves

Gorgeous Spring Hyla Dewitt Bev Necklace. Seeing a lot of geode-like trends for Spring jewelry. I love the colors in this one.

I'm sorry I couldn't fit a larger version of this image on the page, because it's really stunning. This is from a Troubador shoot, and is currently the cover photo for Van Jean (cause they're awesome) (click on that so you can get the full effect). I have been racking my brain to figure out an occasion that requires this ensemble. If you have thoughts on that please share, I need an excuse. ASAP.

Loving this look by Cacharel (shorts on Shopbop). Both pieces. Jacket with skinny white jeans, shorts with a tank and some sandals?

UUUHHHGGG! M Missoni. Love.

Bear with me on this DVF dress. I don't think it looks as fab in this picture, but I saw it last night at an event at Saks (more on that later), and it's intarsia knit and feels so good. Totally wearable for Spring/Summer.

Love this look from the boys at Collard Greens. As they said, perfect for all of those fine Southern gentlemen headed to Camden for the Cup. A fine South Carolina tradition, look out for that 1:30 post time!!!

Friday Faves

Pierrepont Hicks camel hair tie, $140
I adore the idea of this tie, a play on the ever-classic and handsome camel hair coat. Definitely  a statement tie. One of the great gift ideas from Garden & Gun. Pierrepont Hicks has some gorgeous ties and bowties; they also have a tie case (?) that I was sort of fascinated with.

Handmade, personalized bottle opener, $75
Another great gift idea from Garden & Gun. Handmade in the ATL by American Forge South.
Ferragamo Tresha Biker Boot, Moda Operandi
I probably don't have to explain this. They're shearling lined, zip up Fall '12 Ferragamo biker boots for under $1000. My friend Lauren said she thought that wearing them would be like petting a unicorn. (Without the slightest drop of sarcasm.)
Native Union Pop phone, Nordstrom
This may be one of the greatest inventions I've ever seen or heard of; right behind electricity or the wheel. It's a "old-fashioned" handset that can be plugged into your iPhone. A totally weirdo friend of mine sent it to me a week ago (you know who you are, and I love you), and I thought it was great, now I'm seeing Oscar de la Renta and Andre Leon Talley using it. Comes in a bunch of kitschy colors and is super affordable.

Alice + Olivia pant, Neiman Marcus
High-waisted, wide-legged, insane color. Sold.

In love with this jacket from BleuBelle in Savannah. The fur collar detaches. I think everyone needs one of these. (Even if it's 75 degrees in December.)

Bike And Beer

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh my gosh! I found this in Refinery 29's "Boyfriend Gift Guide", which is excellent BTW, and am obsessed! It is a handmade leather bicycle beer holder! WHAT? I love it so much! Genius! Made in Portland, Oregon from Walnut Studio. They have other crafty innovations in their Etsy shop too! Great, great idea. And I love the bike too! (Although I prefer tricycles.) And as a public service reminder, don't drink and bike during the holidays, BUIs DO exist! Additionally, wear a (fashionable) helmet.

Duck Tales

Mallard
So, as per usual, my internet perusing led me to discover a completely odd and random new interest. I won't bore you with the details, but one minute I was looking for new bedding and the next thing I know I was researching antique duck decoys. Yes, it's weird. BUT! Verrrry interesting. Growing up in the South, I've known plenty of hunters and sportsmen.
It's a big part of the culture, and (from my rudimentary understanding) requires a certain dedication and skill. I think some men would almost say there is an art to it. (Apologies to anyone with major issues with hunting, just an opinion here!) But while delving into the world of duck decoys, I realize that these objects are actually a very American art form. It's kind of fascinating, really.

Decoy collecting is actually a very discerning and exceptionally expensive business. There are particular carvers sought out by collectors, and their work can cost (no joke) hundreds of thousands of dollars! The craftsmanship of some of these decoys is really lovely. They are definitely created with an artist's eye. According to Antique Roadshow (which I trust completely) A. Elmer Crowell is widely considered to be the best decoy maker ever; at a 2000 Sotheby's auction one of his Canadian Geese sold for $684,500, then sold again in 2007 along with a similar duck decoy for $1.1 million. EACH. Seriously. A wooden goose.

This is a pair of $1 million fowl. $2.2 for the set.

But what I love is that, contrary to many antique collectibles, duck decoys are actually supposed to show a little wear and tear. If the decoy looks too new, or too realistic it may call into question it's authenticity; if it shows a little wear, it shows that the decoy was actually functional equipment. I am not a gal that would ever want a house full of stuffed animal heads, but I think a set of these little guys would be cute perched on some shelves would be a really warm touch.

Quintessentially Stylish

If you are from the Raleigh area and have ever had to make a purchase from a bridal registry, then you are probably familiar with Quintessentials. It has been a mainstay in the gift and bridal niche here in town, and in the past two years has gotten a refreshing facelift! Raleigh native Kristen Anderson decided to relocate the store (but only a few doors away in North Hills) and expand the space and their offerings.
The new space is open and bright, with walls of china and crystal, and gorgeous vignettes styled with the utmost care and style. I have absolutely loved walking by their windows to check out the ever-changing table settings. One of my favorite traditions Kristen has carried into the new space are the bridal registry displays; a place setting is done and accompanied with a place card with the bride and groom's name on it. I love that you can walk through and actually see everyone's setting and can compare and contrast what different brides are doing. Quintessentials carries a wide assortment of gift items as well, from hostess gifts to great gift ideas for your beau or dad, etc. I LOVE the Bird Dog Bay line of ties (and other boy things like boxers and bowties) they have added; they collar stays are packaged in real shotgun shell casings and you have to look at this adorable page on their website entitled "things Gus ate". If you haven't seen the new space it is certainly worth the visit, and they have even done a fabulous website so you can shop online with Quintessentials as well.

Summer Ties

I LOVE the new ties from Proud Mary's new collection! There are 2 styles featured in the latest from the Charleston-based company, who's mission is to create handmade goods in a socially and ecologically responsible manner. The fabrics for the ties are handmade in Guatemala by local artisans and are 100% cotton. I think they're perfect for summer, I particularly love the Gradient Mint Tie-the colors make me think of the beach. They'd make a fantastic gift, and the prices are great, under $60.

For the Boys

In a slight change of focus, I'd like to hightlight a really cool menswear operation I've recently learned of coming at us out of Atlanta. My dear and fabulous friend was recently a victim of the economy and had to re-enter the job market; she quickly (naturally-because she's amazing) found a spot interning at uber-hip menswear boutique Sid Mashburn.

I really know a lot less about menswear than I feel like I should; there are a lot of intricacies and subtleties to menswear that I find fascinating. Founded in 2007, Sid Mashburn is focused on providing an almost old-fashioned level of service and expertise; they see themselves as part style-consultant, part personal shopper. The concepts of really educating the customers and focusing on getting folks into quality, classic styles are really almost throwback policies. I feel like there should be more boutique-style stores focused on men, especially younger men, to generate the same kind of interest in style and fashion that the ladies get.

The store itself is a nod to the classic masculinity of an English gentleman's club, but with an undercurrent of hipness. They stock high-quality lines in a range of styles, I'd say that it's classic yet pushes the limits for guys that simply cannot imagine life without their Gucci loafers. (Don't laugh, some of them sincerely can't imagine.) If that guy would let Sid Mashburn work on him for a hot second, I think he'd find that he still looks perfectly preppy but more of an individual.

Another fantastic reason to take your significant other to Sid Mashburn: my friend has informed me that the whole staff is adorable. Shoot, maybe go shop for him yourself.

Handcrafted And Handsome

We all know that this is a tough economy, but there is one industry, particularly here in the South that has been suffering for much longer than the past 4 years or so. That would be the textile manufacturers (and most craft goods, for that matter); things have shifted so that it is more affordable for companies to have their goods and products made overseas and by machines, not people. This has greatly impacted the South and its' economy. There is an artist out of Nashville who is striving to change this pattern; Emil Congdon of Emil Erwin is on a mission to bring quality and tradition back to manufacturing.

Inspired by the craftsmanship of his grandfather's generation, Emil creates small batch, made-to-order canvas and leather goods. Everything is designed by the craftsman himself, and handcrafted start to finish in his shop at his home in Nashville, and cost-cutting never supersedes quality. His products are mostly working-style bags; there's a handsome messenger bag, a sturdy, classic briefcase, and a smart shopper tote. His work is vintage-inspired, the products have classic lines and trims, and the materials are made to age and age beautifully.

It's clear that Emil wants his bags to stand the test of time; he wants them to be the treasures generations to come find in their grandparents' attics. He provides his customers with the promise, the guarantee, of quality; he wants his products to be done right.

I am so inspired by artists like Emil; it pains me to think of the jobs and the artistry that we have lost over the years through companies choosing to cut costs and overhead, and I have the deepest respect for the people who are now fighting back against that movement. To be sure, buying a piece from Emil Erwin is more than just an investment in your wardrobe.
